This 14 karat yellow gold brooch, measuring approximately 1 inch in diameter, is a finely detailed and sentimentally significant piece dating to the early 20th century. The design is richly composed with a harmonious blend of structure, ornamentation, and delicate craftsmanship.

At the center sits a deep blue cabochon cut sapphire, bezel-set within an ornate square panel. The central motif is framed by intricate gold work featuring engraved and applied details, including stylized arches and foliate elements that lend a subtle architectural quality. The gold surface shows fine hand-engraving, adding texture and depth to the composition.

Encircling the central panel is an openwork halo of 10 rose-cut diamonds, each set in thin, evenly spaced bezels. The diamonds exhibit a soft, understated shimmer characteristic of rose cuts, contrasting beautifully with the richness of the gold and the saturated blue of the sapphire. Interspersed among the diamonds are additional small cabochon cut sapphire accents, creating a balanced interplay of color and light.

The outer border is further embellished with sculpted gold leaf motifs, lending an organic softness to the otherwise geometric structure. The combination of pierced work, engraving, and gemstone placement reflects a transitional aesthetic, blending late Victorian intricacy with early Art Deco symmetry.

On the reverse, There is a flip up pendant so the piece can be worn as a pendant as well as a brooch. The brooch bears a hand-engraved inscription dated 14.11. 23, noting it was given to Hildegard Pfeffer. This personal dedication adds historical and emotional depth, suggesting the piece was a meaningful gift on Valentine’s Day.

Altogether, the brooch is an elegant and intimate jewel, distinguished by its craftsmanship, balanced design, and enduring sentiment.
