J.E. Caldwell Platinum Golf Club Brooch with Diamonds, Sapphires & Pearl
770-21483Sold
Sold
An elegant early 20th-century golf club brooch by J.E. Caldwell & Co., Philadelphia, finely crafted in platinum. The slender shaft is executed in polished platinum and terminates in a rectangular grip set with a row of 8 French cut blue sapphires, providing a rich contrast of color.
The club head is detailed with 4 single cut diamonds arranged along the face and features a single round white pearl measuring 3.1 millimeters, cleverly representing a golf ball. The crisp geometry, restrained ornamentation, and use of platinum and French ct sapphiress are characteristic of American Art Deco–era design, circa 1915–1930.
Both whimsical and refined, this brooch reflects J.E. Caldwell’s reputation for high-quality craftsmanship and their production of sophisticated sporting-theme jewelry for an affluent clientele.
J.E. Caldwell & Co. was one of America’s most prestigious luxury jewelry and silver retailers, founded in 1839 in Philadelphia by James Emmot Caldwell. From the mid-19th century through the early 20th century, the firm became synonymous with refined taste, exceptional craftsmanship, and the highest standards of quality, serving a wealthy and socially prominent clientele along the East Coast. Although Caldwell retailed imported European pieces, the company was particularly respected for its custom-designed and specially commissioned jewelry, much of it produced in-house or by leading American workshops under Caldwell supervision.
By the late Victorian, Edwardian, and Art Deco periods, J.E. Caldwell was especially known for jewelry in platinum, diamonds, sapphires, and pearls, embracing modern materials and clean design at an early date. Their work often reflects the influence of French and English styles while maintaining a distinctly American restraint and elegance. Caldwell also developed a strong reputation for thematic and novelty jewelry, including sporting motifs such as golf, equestrian, and yachting pieces, created with the same fine materials and meticulous execution as their more formal jewels. Today, J.E. Caldwell jewelry is highly regarded by collectors for its combination of historical significance, superior craftsmanship, and enduring design, representing one of the most important names in American luxury jewelry of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
